FAQ

What is the best beginner unit in Command An Army?
Archer, according to creator guides — not because the base Archer is strong (the 1.5 patch demoted it to C tier), but because it is cheap, common, and evolves into the Flame Archer, which is one of the best units in the game.
What does the Archer evolve into?
Archer (1★) → Longbowman (2★) → Flame Archer (3★). The line is linear with no branching, so every Archer you invest in ends at Flame Archer.
Why was the Archer nerfed?
The 1.5 patch cut Archer range, which removed the unit's main advantage — outranging melee. Creators now describe it as a stepping stone you field only to evolve, and its C-tier ranking reflects that.
What makes the Flame Archer good?
Two things: arched shots and ignite. Arched shots let you place Flame Archers on high ground or behind cover and still hit the enemy, and everything they hit burns for damage over time. Creators call it a must-have for controlling the high ground.
What counters archers?
Cavalry. Archers are the strongest damage in the game and completely helpless once a horse reaches them — which is why every serious lineup includes a Halberdier to stand between the archers and the enemy cavalry. See the unit counters guide.

The line

Stage Star Role
Archer 1★ Cheap, common starter ranged unit. Nerfed to C tier by the 1.5 patch.
Longbowman 2★ The middle step. More range than Archer, not yet the payoff.
Flame Archer 3★ S tier. Arched shots, ignite damage, high-ground control.

The line is linear — no branching — so an Archer you invest in ends at Flame Archer and nowhere else. That makes the decision simple: if you are going to field archers at all, this is the line to commit to.

Why the base Archer is now a stepping stone

The 1.5 patch cut Archer range, and range was the entire reason to field an Archer. A ranged unit that cannot outrange the thing charging it is just a slow melee unit with less health.

Creators responded by demoting it to C tier and reframing it explicitly: the Archer is now “basically a stepping stone for you to get flaming archers.” That is not a criticism of the unit’s design — it is the honest state of the meta, and it changes how you should spend on the line.

Practical consequence: do not invest Mastery or duplicates into an Archer. Level it enough to evolve and put the resources into the Flame Archer.

Why Flame Archer is still S tier

The same patch that gutted the Archer left the Flame Archer at the top of the ranged meta, and the reason is mechanical rather than numerical.

Arched shots. Flame Archers fire over obstacles, which means you can place them on high ground or behind your own shield line and still deal damage. Creators describe this as the whole point — “if you aren’t using this to control the high ground, you’re doing it wrong.” A ranged unit that needs line of sight is much easier to counter than one that does not.

Ignite. Everything a Flame Archer hits burns for damage over time. Against a slow push, that damage stacks while the enemy is still walking toward you.

The verdict across creator tier lists is consistent: Flame Archer is a must-have, and one source calls it “the best ranged unit in the game.”

How to use the line

Place them behind shields, on high ground. Flame Archer’s arched shots make elevation free damage. A Flame Archer on flat ground in front of your line is a wasted unit.

Protect them with spears, not more archers. Cavalry deletes archers, so the unit that keeps your Flame Archers alive is a Halberdier standing between them and the enemy. This is the single most common composition mistake in the game — see unit counters.

Do not evolve early. Evolving raises a unit’s star cost, and a 3-star Flame Archer eats a meaningful share of an early account’s budget. Rank up first, then evolve — the star limit guide has the maths.

Expect to be pushed. Flame Archers are a threat, so opponents who know the matchup will send cavalry at them immediately. That is a feature: the cavalry has to come to you, which puts it in range of your spears.

Where it sits in the meta

The best units tier list has Flame Archer in S tier and Archer in C. If you want to understand why a line can have both, the unit counters guide explains the matchup that decides it — and the evolution guide covers how the upgrade path works across every line, not just this one.

For the account-level decision about what to field, the star limit guide is the one that decides whether a 3-star Flame Archer actually makes it into your lineup.
