Command An Army Best Units Tier List — Update 2 (September 2026)

The best units in Command An Army after Update 2 and the 1.5 patch — Spartans, Berserkers, Flame Archers and Lancers ranked S to C from creator consensus.

FAQ

What is the best unit in Command An Army right now?
Spartans are still the consensus top frontline despite taking multiple nerfs in 1.5 — they now break formation when hit, but their shield still tanks far more than any alternative. Berserkers, Flame Archers and Lancers round out the S tier after the Archer range nerf pushed melee damage up the meta.
What changed in the Command An Army 1.5 patch?
Three things reshaped the tier list: Archer range was nerfed hard, Spearmen got faster and gained four more units in formation (28 total), and Spartans took multiple nerfs including breaking formation when hit. Berserkers rose as a result, because the nerf to archers removed their worst matchup.
Is the new Reaper unit good?
No. Update 2 added Reaper and Reaper Knight, and creators rate Reaper as one of the weakest units in the game — it is built for one-on-one fights in a game that is fundamentally about army-vs-army pushes, and it loses to archers it cannot reach.
Is Mace good or bad in Command An Army?
Creators disagree, which is worth knowing before you invest. One camp rates Mace S tier as a melee DPS that breaks blocks and crushes shield lines. Another rates it among the worst shock infantry in the game. Both agree on the mechanic — Mace has block damage — so the split is about how often that payoff actually lands in real matches.
Which units dropped in the current meta?
Archer fell to C tier — it is now a stepping stone to Flame Archers rather than a unit you field. Javeliner dropped to C after a hyped rise that did not perform, and Pikeman sits in C because Halberdier does the same job better for the same star cost.

This tier list reflects creator consensus after Update 2 (Ranked & Guilds) and the 1.5 balance patch, as of September 2026. There is no official ranking in Command An Army, and the meta moves with every patch — this page is updated when it does.

Two patches reshaped this list. 1.5 nerfed Archer range hard, which removed the worst matchup for every melee unit and pushed Berserkers up. The same patch buffed Spearmen (faster, four more units in formation) and nerfed Spartans (they now break formation when hit). Update 2 then added Ranked, Guilds and two new units: Rapier and Reaper.

If you are still learning the systems behind the rankings, read unit counters first — a well-countered S-tier unit still loses to a C-tier unit that hard-counters it.

S tier

Unit Type Why it’s S-tier
Spartan Special (4★) Still the definitive frontline even after 1.5 nerfed them. Creators describe the shield as taking “three to five business days” to break while the unit shreds anything in front of it. The nerf is real — they now break formation when hit — but nothing else tanks like this.
Berserker Special (4★) The biggest winner of the 1.5 patch. With archer range cut, the unit that used to melt before reaching the line now gets there. It still loses to Flame Archers unless it charges them directly.
Flame Archer Ranged (3★) The best ranged unit in the game and the payoff of the Archer line. Arched shots let you place them on high ground, and everything they hit ignites. Creators call it a must-have and the reason to invest in Archers at all.
Lancer Cavalry (4★) The fastest unit in the game with the highest rush damage. Its job is shock — breaking a line in one charge. It does not win prolonged fights, which is why creators pair it with Immortals for the follow-up.

A tier

Unit Type Why it’s A-tier
Halberdier Spear (3★) The versatile pick: stops cavalry, breaks shields, and charges the flag. Its only real weakness is archers, who shred it — which is exactly why it cannot be the top of the meta.
Spear Militia Spear (2★) Strong for a 2-star. More mobility and range than Shieldman, which makes it better at dirty placements. One creator put it in S, most put it in A.
Samurai Special (4★) High damage with more bulk than Berserker, and it beats any cavalry in prolonged combat. The safer of the two 4-star damage carries.
Pikeman Spear Rated A by creators who value the Spearman buffs carrying up the evolution line, and C by those who say Halberdier does the same job better. Read the Pikeman note before investing.
Imperial Halberdier Spear (4★) A tankier Halberdier with more damage. Everything good about Halberdier, one star higher.
Immortal Special (4★) Durable follow-up unit. The Lancer breaks the line, the Immortal walks through the gap — and it is no slower than the horse in practice.

B tier

Unit Type Why it’s B-tier
Shieldman Shield (1★) Slow, but genuinely tanky — the best beginner frontline and the start of the Imperial Wall line. No offensive output, which is the whole point.
Sentinel Shield (2★) Tanky 2-star with stats close to Spear Militia. A solid mid-step on the way to Imperial Wall.
Cavalry Cavalry (2★) A beginner-level cavalry. Described as one of the weaker B-tier units — it does the job until you can field a Lancer.
Squire Shield (2★) A stepping stone to Knight. Not a unit you build around.
Mercenary Shield (1★) The other starter shield unit, and the first step toward Knight. Useful early, replaced quickly.

C tier

Unit Type Why it’s C-tier
Archer Ranged (1★) Was a core unit; the 1.5 range nerf turned it into a stepping stone. Field it only to evolve into Flame Archers.
Javeliner Ranged (2★) Hyped, then dropped. Creators bumped it up and then walked it back — “no one’s using this.” It is unusual in that it can break shields, but its block and HP are too low to hold a line.
Pikeman Spear See the disagreement note above — half the sources rank it C.
Reaper Special (2★) Update 2’s new unit and a disappointment. Built for one-on-one duels in an army game, and it loses to archers it cannot reach.

Where creators disagree

Two units split the sources, and pretending otherwise would make this list less useful.

Mace. One creator rates it S tier — a melee DPS that breaks blocks, walks through shield lines, and synergises beautifully with your own shield units eating arrows. Another rates it among the worst shock infantry in the game. Both agree it has block damage; they disagree on how often that pays off. If you are short on star budget, treat Mace as a specialist you bring when the enemy is shield-heavy, not a default pick.

Pikeman. Rated A by sources who see the Spearman buffs carrying up the line, and C by sources who say Halberdier simply does it better.

How to use this list

Rankings are only half the decision. Three systems constrain what you can actually field:

  1. Star limit — every unit costs its star level against a cap that grows with your account level. A 4-star unit eats a third of an early-game budget, which is why creators tell new players to take Spartan and Samurai and skip the rest. The star limit guide covers the maths.
  2. Counters — a C-tier unit that hard-counters your S-tier unit wins. Unit counters explains the chart and how to check block damage in-game.
  3. Evolution stage — a fully invested 2-star beats a fresh 3-star. Read the evolution guide before you evolve anything, because evolving raises the star cost.

How fresh is this list?

The rankings were rebuilt on 21 September 2026 against creator tier lists published after Update 2 (19 September) and the 1.5 patch. The previous version of this page predated both patches and had Spartans and Lancers alone in S tier — the Archer nerf and the Spearman buffs are what changed the shape of the list.
